I lived in Europe for nearly three years, including one year in Milan. I eventually learned to appreciate unadulterated espresso, no milk, no sugar. My favorite is the Italian style ristretto, meaning a very short pull that comes up only half-way in an espresso cup. (This is the way espresso is made all over Italy, but you have to ask for it special in Spain or France.) This only works when the coffee itself is of excellent quality, the machine is good, and the guy behind the bar knows what he is doing. I’ve either owned or used a lot of non-professional domestic espresso machines, and I had pretty much given up on the idea of duplicating this experience in a home kitchen, either in Europe or America.

The closest I came was with the Nespresso machines, which make an espresso that most Italians will recognize as quite good, but which by no means scales the heights of the espresso served in quite average bars in Naples. But I always felt that the espresso capsules were quite expensive. On a hunch, really as a last ditch effort, I decided to acquire a Pavoni. Because they are absurdly expensive if purchased new, I purchased one on Italian e-bay for about 110 US dollars, and had a friend bring it over.

I expected that the thing would be a fixer-upper at best, a project, an eccentric hobby. But after some fiddling with tamping (I had to buy a real tamper to replace the original plastic one) and after figuring out how to let the machine warm up and how much coffee to use, I pretty quickly learned to make an espresso that would make even people from Naples envious. But here is the kicker. According to information stamped on the base, my machine is 30 years old!!! It has obviously been maintained well and I suspect that the seals have been replaced at least once, but the point is this machine is indestructible. According to websites I have read, there has been virtually no change in the machine’s design in 40 years. Replacement parts are available. I can almost imagine paying for a new one, it would be a worthy investment. But if you can’t swing that, check out e-bay. Of course, let the buyer beware…

This works VERY well to make a strong coffee that is more intense than that from any drip or press coffee maker but not so powerful as a big high pressure espresso machine in a cafe. Somewhere in between – but quite nice and inexpensive for the home. Cleans up easily. These are made in India (probably by guys sitting with hammers on the sidwalk) so may vary a bit sample to sample.

The only problem is the rubber seal ring – this gradually wears out and if you don’t find an original Bialetti replacement, it can leak steam no matter how hard you gorilla down the threads.

I became an espresso fan after living in Italy for a couple summers, having never been a coffee drinker. This machine delivers the drink I became accustomed to in Europe. It took absolutely no time to set up, and after running a few ‘clean’ cycles, I had perfect espresso in my house. Haven’t gotten through the sampler pack that came with the machine, but they are each delicious in a unique way. Comes with a guide to each of the flavors, which is very helpful, too. I still can’t believe how it puts the perfect ‘head’ on the drink every time.

This machine makes good espresso and good cappuccinos. In terms of fully automatic machines, its price is infinitely more reasonable than that of a Jura. The price of a Jura X9 at 00 is about that of a commercial machine. This Saeco will do nicely until I get my Faema E61 or Prestige semi-automatic 2-groupers with a Mahlkonig grinder. I doubt if my commercial machine will make a much better espresso or cappuccino but I think a manual machine has fewer maintenace problems and I have more control over the milk foaming. However the Saeco does offer the manual steam wand as well as its cappuccitore (milk foamer) and they both work well. I also like the energy saver feature of the Saeco since I prefer not to power off the machine. I also like the cup warmer. The screen menu is easy to use and the different options and diagnostics are useful.

It’s amazing how many companies produce coffee makers, how similar they look, and the enormous quality difference. This one works and doesn’t have a major defect that I can cite. Something more perfect would probably cost more, so I’m convinced this is the best purchase if you want a 4-cup capacity.

Most of what I know about coffee makers is a result of making unfortunate purchases. Some are extremely difficult to pour without spilling and this one is ok. Just use your thumb to lift the lid and you’ll be ok with regard to pouring.

I’m through with coffee makers that don’t automatically shut off. I like coffee but dislike burnt coffee. You might not have this problem especially since this is only a 4-cup capacity, but it’s something to consider.

When you buy a coffee maker, think about the artistic quality of the design and try to avoid those that have a high-design appearance. The more artistic and unique it looks, the more likely it is to have a functional defect in my experience. It is not easy to build a better mousetrap but it is possible to build one that merely looks better than others. Mr. Coffee avoids these things and sticks to what works for most people.

This is a simple and inexpensive coffee maker that will serve one to two people well. The best result is you don’t even notice the coffee maker because it’s working fine, and I this one does that for me.
